According to studies, harassment of women is on the rise every single day.

Even in the twenty-first century, one of these abuses is the well-known catcalling, usually perpetrated by men and young teenage boys.

What is Catcalling?

Catcalling is a circumstance in which a person makes sexual remarks to another person while strolling by.

This is something that many women go through, and it has a significant psychological impact on them.

Wolf-whistling, profanity, sexist slurs, and other forms of catcalling are only a few instances. 

As a parent, I would urge you to prepare your daughter for these unwanted behaviors and how to deal with them.

Catcalling lowers one's self-esteem and should not be taken lightly if you want to safeguard your daughter.

Let's quickly dive in at how you should let your kid handle catcalling.

 1. Ignore;

                        

 

 

 This is one of the essential tips I taught my daughter to use anytime she is catcalled in public.

And this is, without a doubt, my favorite.

Reacting or responding to catcalling gives the perpetrator or makes them feel like they have power over you, so ignore it.

2. Share your experience; you must teach your daughter always to share her experiences anytime she faces a sexual harassment situation.

This is important because sharing her experience provides some relief to your child.

 

3. Pretend to be on a call;

Your daughter can be taught to use this strategy if the offender seems to be following her.

Therefore, it is advisable that she fakes talking to a friend and informs her that she is just around the block.

Better still, she could pretend to be on the phone with the police to frighten the offender into staying away.

4. Pull out your phone and record;    

This is, by far, the most effective technique to silence the offender, in my opinion.

Putting him on tape and broadcasting it to the entire world will undoubtedly make him shudder and feel embarrassed.

I can assure you that the perpetrator will never try to harass your daughter or any other woman in public.

5. Give him a reply,

When you get catcalled in a public space, you can choose to give a reply.

Be loud and vocal, repeating exactly what the harasser has said to draw the attention of bystanders. This way, the harasser definitely will feel embarrassed and quickly run away.

6. Always have a weapon on you;

Carrying a weapon on you could be anything apart from a gun unless authorized to have one. You can let your daughter take simple weapons like pepper spray or a jackknife to defend herself if the harasser tries following her to abuse her.

Conclusion; No human should ever feel unsafe or uncomfortable just for being themselves, and we should always empower our daughters to stand up for themselves and never feel intimidated.
