What is Co-sleeping
Co-Sleeping with a baby could be defined
as the practice of parents and young children sleeping in the same
bed.
Sleeping next to your baby at night has a lot of good
benefits for both mother and baby.
Mostly, the baby sleeps in
proximity either on the same bed or in a baby crib near your bed.
At
least at the early stage of your baby's life thus, from when the baby
is born up to when he is 6 months old, it is advisable to sleep close to the
baby.
Here are a few reasons why co-sleeping with a baby is very
important to both the child and mother.
1. Studies have
shown that a lot of sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI) can be
linked to a lack of co-sleeping. When the baby is in a separate room,
there is little monitoring of their well-being.
Therefore,
sleeping next to your baby lowers the risk of sudden unexpected death
in infancy.
2. Another benefit of co-sleeping with a baby is that it allows the mother to easily breastfeed the baby due to the proximity.
The mother would not have to walk a distance anymore just to go and breastfeed her baby, making everything easier for both the baby and mother.
3. Co-sleeping brings some form of a close bond between the baby and the mother.
Bonding with your baby is essential because it helps release hormones and chemicals in the brain leading to the baby's rapid growth.
4. One other importance of co-sleeping is that it helps the baby develop a good breathing pattern.
The baby learns how to breathe correctly when sleeping close to the mother as the baby takes cues from the mother.
5. The baby does not have to cry a lot before being attended to. With the family close by, much attention will always be given to them.
The baby tends to have more rest when his needs are met early when closing. Similarly, other family members also get to rest well and have a peaceful night's sleep.
Conclusion
There are arguments that co-sleeping leads to an increased risk of SUDI because of the baby's proximity to the mother, thus sleeping on the same bed.
There are a lot of proven solutions to that.
One main argument opposing co-sleeping is that the mother may sleep on the baby. This could be true, but to prevent this, the baby must have his crib in the same room as the mother for the baby to always be placed in the crib when they fall asleep.
