When I had my first child, I always asked myself, how do I go about raising
him?
Which
parenting style will be the best to adopt so I can raise my child to become the
best of himself when he grows up?
These
questions gave me a lot of sleepless nights that led me to do a few types of research and consultations, which I will lay out here in this article, so
you don't also go through the same struggles I went through to find the perfect
parenting style to raise your child.
In this
article, we will be going through all the parenting styles and the various
effects they may have on your children when they grow up so you know which will
be best for you.
The first
type of parenting style we will look at is the Authoritarian style
of parenting.
The authoritarian style of parenting
This is a
style of parenting in which parents are highly stern with their children and
expect them to follow their rules without question.
If the child
does not follow the instructions set by these parents, they will be
severely punished.
These parents are less attentive to their children's needs. This isn't to say that these parents don't care about their children.
The majority of these parents believe that raising their children in this manner will benefit them in the future and help them fit into society.
Advantages
Of Authoritarian Parenting Style
Though many
feel this parenting style is terrible due to the high level of strictness from
the parents, it has some good sides.
1. Because they have been taught to heed
instructions their whole lives, the children of these parents are often well
behaved in society and always follow the law.
As a result, it's difficult to see such children ever getting into
trouble with the authorities, whether at school or elsewhere.
2. Another good benefit that kids who go
through the authoritarian parenting style get is that these kids become very
good at accomplishing all their set goals.
All of their lives, they have been trained to follow
instructions and are to carry all the laid down instructions till they see it
through till the end.
Safety is assured.
The third benefit of authoritarian parenting is guaranteed the child's safety, and the youngster understands that disobeying safety advice would result in negative repercussions.
For example, if he is told not to leave where he is and to stay put for
his own protection, he will not question it.
Disadvantages Of Authoritarian Parenting Style
1. One of the most
prevalent outcomes of authoritarian parenting is the development of fear in the
child.
Because they are afraid of being reprimanded or punished, many youngsters
find it extremely difficult to express themselves openly. Even as adults, they
are so scared due to their upbringing.
These kids have a hard time making judgments for themselves later in life because they are cautious.
Every life decision they make is made to make their parents happy, even if it makes them miserable or unhappy.
2. Another disadvantage of the authoritarian parenting style is that the children
get angry quickly when he grows up to be an adult.
They tend to explode and vent their anger at the slightest provocation when they
grow up.
3. These youngsters are typically shy and clumsy, and they have a hard time
socializing and making their own judgments.
Making new friends becomes difficult for them, and they prefer to spend
their time indoors alone. This could be due to the terror instilled in them
since childhood when they were raised.
Permissive Parenting Style
This parenting approach allows children to make whatever decisions they choose with the full support of their parents.
The majority of permissive parents regard their children more like
friends than children.
Even if there are some established norms in these households, parents rarely discipline their children when they do something wrong.
Is this, however, the most effective parenting approach to adopt?
Let's find out by examining the benefits and drawbacks.
Advantages of permissive parenting.
1. The first benefit of a permissive parenting style is that the child has
a high level of self-esteem.
Because the youngster has complete freedom to do anything he wants
without fear of being chastised by his parents, the child develops a great deal
of courage or, in other words, self-esteem.
They get the opportunity to try out various activities on their own
and rapidly determine which carrier is ideal for them.
Disadvantages of Permissive Parenting Style
1. There is a
severe lack of discipline among the children. When children grow up with this
style of upbringing, they often struggle to follow the rules and restrictions imposed on them at school or at work.
The majority of them also find it impossible to follow the country's laws in which they find themselves, resulting in frequent problems.
2. When children are raised in a permissive parenting style, they are
more likely to become bullies in school or at work as they grow older.
When they injure individuals physically and emotionally, they become careless or don't know when to stop.
3. Lower motivation
Because there is no structured guidance for the child, the parents offer the
youngster complete freedom to do whatever he feels and wants, which may result
in the child receiving little or no motivation from the parents when they make
some achievements.
After a few failures, these children believe that no one cares
about their achievements or losses and give up on life.
Authoritative Parenting Style
Many parenting
experts endorse this parenting method because of the various benefits it
provides compared to its drawbacks.
This may sound similar to the first type of parenting we examined, but there is
a difference.
Authoritative parents are often harsh with their children, yet they are
also incredibly affectionate. These parents are flexible and allow their
children some freedom and give them all the support they could wish for, but
only up to a certain point when, if the child violates the restrictions set for
him, he is subjected to a reasonable penalty to ensure that he does
not do so again in the future.
Almost everything the kid does is restricted. For example, the child has
the freedom to watch television, but only for a certain amount of time.
He also gets the freedom to play whenever he wants, but he must assist in putting all of his toys away when he is finished.
Here is one disadvantage of this type of parenting style.
Disadvantages of Authoritative parenting.
1. Your kids might one day rebel against
you because of the authoritarian style of parenting.
Benefits of Authoritative style of parenting.
1. Children raised in authoritative
homes develop the ability to persevere in the face of adversity when things
don't go their way.
They persist in pursuing
their passion until they achieve success.
These children also have
the freedom to express themselves wherever they are.
2. When these children grow up to be adults, they comprehend and accept the
rules and regulations taught to them, and they take responsibility
for their actions when they breach the law.
These children grow up to
be decent citizens who show respect to everyone they meet.
3. They become more successful.
Many studies have indicated that children raised with an authoritative
parenting style are more successful later in life.
This is because these
kids are always upbeat and have a good outlook on life, which makes them
motivated to master new skills.
Neglectful parenting style
As the name implies, these parents are irresponsible and unconcerned about
their children.
Parents are more
concerned with matters other than their children.
Some people are more
concerned with their business than with their children.
Others go about their
lives, unconcerned about their children's presence.
The majority of these
children grow up to be lonely and depressed.
Even though these children have complete freedom to do anything they want, they become unhappy because they do not receive adequate attention from their parents.
Advantages of Neglectful parenting
1. One benefit of neglecting parenting is that children are given ample
room and freedom to explore new things, which may lead to her discovering their
life's purpose or deciding on a career path when she is older.
2. Because the children
are frequently left alone, they are forced to learn how to live independently
and provide for themselves without relying on others.
Disadvantages of Neglectful parenting style
1. One significant disadvantage is that
the child grows up without any emotional ties to their parents.
Since the parent failed
to establish that relationship from the start, the children
get unconcerned about their parents later on.
2. Socialization becomes tough for these children.
Children's socialization
begins in the home. From their interactions with their parents, children learn
how to socialize.
However, because of their neglecting parents, these children would find it extremely difficult to communicate with others, as children learn via practice and observation.
3. Depression
Many of these children will grow up to be gloomy and miserable.
They feel worthless and
unwanted, harming their mental health, leading to
depression, substance misuse, and even suicide.
