Do you always tell your child something, and he is bent on disrespecting you? Let's say you ask him to do this and what you realize is he does the opposite, and he doesn't do it at all.
He sometimes talks back when you are instructing him to do something.
If this is something you go through frequently, there is a way out.
You can end this with the tips I will be sharing with you in this article.
But before we look at that, let's first find out why kids behave in such a manner.
Why do kids disrespect authorities?
There are many possible reasons why kids have no respect for authorities.
1. Upbringing;
This is the direct cause of you, the parent. How you train your child will determine how they will turn out. Children learn everything from their parents, and they observe almost everything we do, and they copy them.
If you are always seen talking rudely, insulting, or disrespecting authorities, they definitely will pick that up as a habit.
2. Peer group influence;
What is the type of friends your kids hang out with? How do they behave towards authorities?
Bad peer groups can significantly influence your child, even if your kid isn't the disrespectful type.
We all have been kids before and know how friends can influence us into doing something we might now like.
In the same way, our kids are also vulnerable to this kind of influence.
3. Tension at home;
Another major cause of children being disobedient is if there is tension at home. Any form of stress can create a hostile atmosphere for the child, hindering his willingness to obey orders.
According to a lot of research conducted, it has been revealed that most children from broken homes where the father and mother are no longer together have high chances of being disobedient to authorities.
Now that we are familiar with the causes of children being disobedient, the next step is identifying how to handle such a child and help him become a better member of society.
How to help a disobedient child become obedient.
1. Lead by example;
Since children emulate whatever they see people doing, it is best to teach them through how you carry yourself. If they see you doing what is right, there is no way they will do otherwise.
That is why there is a famous saying '' leadership by example''.
2. Be ready to explain why;
You wouldn't like it when you are ordered to do something without explaining why. In the same way, your kids will also be pissed off if you don't go the extra mile in letting them understand why you are asking them to do something.
Let them know why they must follow your orders.
3. Give reward;
When you train them with gifts for doing good, they will be pleased and motivated to continue doing what they've done to deserve the blessings.
So whenever you give them a task to perform, let them know what comes with the job or what they will get by doing the task or obeying.
Make sure the gift you plan on giving out to them is something they adore and will be happy with.
4. Praise them when they do good;
Always let them know you appreciate their efforts and give them praises when needed.
Positive reinforcement has always proven to be a great way of motivation.
For instance, let's say your child does not like washing his hands every day after eating though you always tell him to do so if not by forcing him, and one day, you see him going to wash his hands all by himself without you asking him to do so.
When you see him doing that, praise him and let him know you are pleased about his act.
He will start seeing how happy you become when he does the right thing, encouraging him to always obey you.
5. Turn chores into a fun activity;
This technique is best to do if your kids hate doing chores. If he always leaves his toys lying on the floor, why not turn that into a challenge for him?
Children love challenging games; therefore, instead of asking him again to come and place his toys at the right place, which you know will be very difficult for him to comply with, turn it into a challenge for him.
Inform him that you want to play a game with him. Let him know you want to see how fast he can be in putting his toys back and pretend like you are timing how fast he is.
You will realize he will do the right thing with lightning speed.
I hope these 5 tips help you put your child in order where he will always give the needed respect to authority.
