‘’ My teenager does absolutely nothing when at home’’ does your teenager also behave as such?
This question doesn't come as a surprise to me at all because it is now a common thing in most homes where fully-abled teenagers don’t get involved in helping out with various responsibilities at home.
All they spend their time on is playing video games and being on the phone whiles there are chores to do.
I believe most parents are not aware that they have the right to assign duties to their teenagers at home; that is why they always struggle with the chores all by themselves.
Assigning responsibilities to kids isn't a form of punishment being meted out to your child ( I need to get this one out before I get attacked for it; just kidding). Instead, it is a means of preparing your teenager for life ahead where they will be living on their own.
As most people will say, the more you keep practicing something, the more it becomes easier and a part of you.
Because of these reasons, I took it upon myself to put down some 5 responsibilities your teenager can help you with at home, which can also help them in the future.
Without going about any longer, here are some of the responsibilities of a teenager at home.
1. Tidying up the living room;
No one can leave in dirt and be healthy. That is why it is essential to keep your surrounding very clean.
This duty can be assigned to your teenager as his sole responsibility to help maintain a clean environment at home.
Your teenager helping out with tidying up the living room can help him develop a cleanliness habit, which can help improve his health conditions, too, if he is allergic to dust.
2. Cooking;
I know there are a lot of services out there where you can order food in the comfort of your home or even go out to eat at a restaurant.
But what happens if these services are no longer available? Or maybe something terrible as a war breaks out in the community where your teenager moves out to leave on his own in the future.
These are some of the few reasons why your child must learn some cooking skills to prepare him for the future and also to help out at home if you can't have access to outside food anymore.
3. Throwing away the rubbish;
This is a significant task that can also help your teenager be more responsible and give you a helping hand at home.
Many diseases can be prevented when your teenager takes up the responsibility of getting rid of the trash at home.
Allowing your teenager to take this responsibility can make him feel valid at home, where he will think that his contribution is vital for the whole family's benefit.
4. Vacuuming the floor;
If you want your child to learn about being patient, this is one chore that can help him become that.
Vacuuming the floor will teach your teenager that achieving excellent results in life does take a lot of time and consistency, just like how it takes time to clean a floor.
This will also make him become more focused and concentrated on his goals in the future.
5. Doing the laundry;
Who takes care of the dirty laundry at home? If it is you the parent, then you should consider delegating that to your teenager.
They need to develop the habit of doing the laundry on their own so as to learn how to always stay neat and clean.
This can help you, the parent have some time off to rest on weekends after working so hard during the week.
